The old way of treating people at work has failed. Only 30% of employees are engaged in their jobs, and in this fast-paced world that's just not enough. The world's best companies understand this, and have been quietly treating people differently for nearly two decades.
Now you can learn their secrets and discover The Engagement Bridge™ model, proven to build bottom line value for companies through sustainable employee engagement.
Companies with the best cultures generate stock market returns of twice the general market and enjoy half the employee turnover of their peers. Their staff innovate more, deliver better customer service and, hands-down, beat the competition. These companies outperform and disrupt their markets. They break the rules of traditional HR, they rebel against the status quo.
Build it has found these rebels and the rulebreakers. From small startups to global powerhouses, this book shows that courage, commitment and a people-centric mindset, rather than money and resources, are what you need to turn an average business into a category leader.
The book follows the clear and proven Engagement Bridge™ model, developed from working with thousands of leading companies worldwide on their own employee engagement journeys. The practical model highlights the areas that leaders need to examine in order to build a highly engaged company culture and provides a framework for success.
Build it is packed with exclusive tips, tools brand case studies from HR rebels including Brewdog, Virgin, LinkedIn, Atlassian, Zappos, Buffer, American Express, VayerMedia and many more. Readers will learn:
- How employee engagement helps companies perform.
- The key factors that drive engagement, and how they work together.
- What the world's most rebellious companies have done to break the rules of traditional HR and improve engagement.
- How to implement The Engagement BridgeTM model to boost productivity, innovation and better decision making.
Unique in this category, Build it is written from two sharply different perspectives.
Glenn Elliott is a multi-award winning Entrepreneur of the Year, CEO and growth investor. He talks candidly about the mistakes and missteps he has made whilst building Reward Gateway into a $500m category leader in employee engagement technology.
Debra Corey brings 30 years experience in senior level HR roles at global companies such as Gap, Quintiles, Honeywell and Merlin Entertainments. She shares the practical tools and case studies that can kickstart your employee engagement plan, bringing her own pragmatic and engaging style to each situation.

About the authors
Debra Corey is a highly experienced and award-winning HR consultant, world-class speaker, six-time author, and has been named as one of the top 101 global employee engagement influencers and HR Most Influential Thinkers. She’s had a varied career, working for global companies such as Gap Inc., Honeywell, Merlin Entertainments and Reward Gateway, where she’s developed and delivered HR strategies in a rebellious way, pushing the boundaries and challenging the status quo to truly drive employee engagement. In 2019 Debra founded her own company as Chief Pay It Forward Officer, where she’s inspiring and helping others to bring out their inner rebel and drive business change.
Over the course of her career, Debra has been fuelling the employee engagement rebelution through a variety of ways, including speaking at events and leading workshops around the world, teaching professional courses and writing. An accomplished author, Debra has published six best-selling books relating to people, culture, engagement and leadership.
I'm an entrepreneur and employee engagement expert. I was a CEO for 17 years, building a £1bn revenue global technology business. I've learned my lessons the hard way - by doing it. I'm not a consultant with a theoretical model, I've got the scars from doing this for real.
A software engineer by training and MBA drop out by choice, it took a ten-year corporate career for me to understand how employee disengagement feels. I eventually escaped and went back to my roots as an entrepreneur where I perfected the art of treating people properly to get the best out of them.
After a series of failed businesses, I founded Reward Gateway back in 2006 with a radical, new approach and a fresh ambitious outlook to challenge the financial services industry. EVERYONE said that we'd be bust within a year. But companies loved what we did and we thrived.
15 years later, Reward Gateway has nearly 2500 clients in 23 countries serviced by 500 staff in nine offices. we've sold the business to private equity three times, and I finally stepped down as CEO in 2017 to focus on sharing what I'd learned about people and employee engagement.
Building RG I learned a huge amount about leadership, company culture and how to create an environment where people can do their best work.
I live in Berlin, Germany with my partners Kristian & Lucas and a Daschund called Wesley and have retired from business and HR.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 February 2018I started reading Build It because I’m amazed at how many of my friends and disengaged at work and hoped the book would give me some practical tips that I could use to help change that, even if it was just in my little slither of the world.
So far, I’m about halfway through, and the book does not disappoint. It’s different to many of the other business titles that I’ve read for a couple of reasons:
1) It’s a great mix of both theory and practical examples from people and organisations who have been there, done it and got the scars to prove it.
2) It’s written by two people who have built an extremely successful business by taking the advice they’ve shared in the book. This is tried and tested and it works.
I love the variety of case studies throughout and how there is something for everyone from the ‘quite rebellious’ to ‘off the scale rebel’.
Each chapter does a great job outlining the key things to strive for if you are to make a change in your organisation around a particular layer of The Engagement Bridge, however, I think my favourite thing in each chapter is the section called ‘Making a start’. Change is scary for many of us and this section of the book helps to break that change down into bitesize chunks. It reminds you that you don’t have to do a complete 360 overnight, you just have to start somewhere.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 August 2019I have been looking for a good book on culture change for a while and I came across this whilst browsing. When it arrived I had a flick through the pages like I always do but was unable to put it down because it was so good. It’s extremely easy to read and very engaging. The book is well structured and informative packed with great ways to increase engagement. I particularly appreciated the tools available on the website which is great to get started. Moreover I contacted one of the authors (Debra) and she was very approachable and thanked me for my feedback. I really think it’s great when an author lives up to your expectations and is truly passionate about sharing knowledge to improve people’s experience at work. As an HR professional, this impressed me and I am pleased that this book is now available to share with leaders and the HR community. Great job on getting an often unnecessarily over complicated subject across in a clear, articulate engaging way. Would definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2018I found the book very informative and practical with easy to navigate chapters. It is clearly written by authors with a wealth of experience and understanding and designed for everyday use for those involved IR reward and employee engagement (that’s most of us). I particularly enjoyed the communications and recognition chapters and will use the book as a useful reference tool for future project. I enjoyed the read immensely.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 February 2018Whilst the book says it is about Employee Engagement, it is much more than that.
If you have ever wanted to have one book that opens a gateway to ideas and solution to HR problems then this is the book for you.
It looks at ten really important HR aspects (these are the elements of the Bridge - its central theme), delivering a range of starting point solutions, dos, don'ts and also real-life examples of what others have done - that way you can borrow the ones you like to fit in with your own requirements.
Written in an easy to follow style, absent of jargon, it with be a well dog-eared book in my collection within no time.
I got an early advance copy of the book, so feel pretty happy to have read it before the launch date too.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2024This is my bible and turn to book for my work. I work in L&D and without this I wouldn’t be as successful as I have been fortunate to be.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2018The world is changing - and so is business. Gone are the days of working for the same business your whole life. The best employees want something different from their business. They want to feel engaged. They to feel part of something.
The Rebel Playbook provides the best (and most candid) overview of how businesses need to operate and what they need to do if they are going to truly engage with their people, keep them longer and get the most out of them. It is an easy to read book and something highly recommended if you want to make a difference to your employees and your business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great read for aspiring founders and anyone looking to manage teams better
I've been luck enough to spend much of my last 15 years working alongside some of the most successful founders of 'scale-ups' and this book absolutely reflects what great businesses like the ones I've seen do so well (even a few of our members quoted!). This books provides a great framework to approach the area for anyone looking to glean practicable ideas and even a blue print of how to transform their employees' experience.
What really brings it to life are the anecdotal examples throughout. If you run a business or manage teams and want to explore best practice in employee engagement you should read this book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2018A mix of theory and real-life practical examples make Build it a must read for any HR professionals who are looking to push the boundaries and make the world a better place to work.
Build it breaks down the 10 key components that are essential to creating an engaged workforce and explains how to utilise everyday business functions as useful tools for employee engagement. There are lots of great examples from a range of businesses (in size and industry sector) to illustrate how implementing small changes can have a huge impact on how your teams work and perform.
I absolutely recommend reading this book if you're looking to build teams that are highly motivated, loyal, engaged and ultimately HAPPY to work for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless list of empty cases
Please put your money somewhere else, get the new Springsteen album or a couple of good movies instead [like Boiler Room that is very interesting in terms of internal communication] but don’t buy this useless “book”

5.0 out of 5 stars Plausibler Ansatz mit praktikablen Unternehmensbeispielen

5.0 out of 5 stars A World Class Book!
WOW… Glenn Elliott and Debra Corey have created a winner with this book. I read it… twice!
A fantastic read for anyone looking to increase employee engagement, strengthen work culture, positively impact the customer experience and accelerate the business results that leaders care about most.
The Engagement Bridge they write about is more than a consulting model. It is packed with practical ideas that businesses of any size can deploy.
Elliott and Corey beautifully lay out the components of the Engagement Bridge with real life examples (plays) that will accelerate business outcomes when followed. I love how they clearly show the reader that following the methods will help generate the conditions that allow people to engage with their jobs and the organization – which will ultimately create a better place to work.
In a world where employee engagement has become a ubiquitous term that is all too often freely tossed around by leaders, Elliott and Corey do a nice job providing a very accurate and useful definition all managers can learn from and apply.
The research shared throughout will help any reader heighten awareness and, in some cases, concern for the lack of engagement at work and how expensive it really is. Fortunately, they also provide solutions to these issues as they take the reader on a journey through each of the 10 Engagement Bridge components. After reading about each component you can expect to walk away with several ideas you can put into practice immediately in your business.
Enjoy!
